Now more than ever, more people are working remotely from home. Even though we’ve been living in this pandemic for over a year, it wasn’t until a couple months ago that I decided to invest in creating a dedicated office space for myself. I had been using a hand me down desk from a previous roommate which was relatively small for the work I was trying to do at it. The corner I was using as my home office space was boring and dull. I noticed I had been sitting hunched over 24/7. My home office space was lacking function and comfort and it definitely was not a space that made me excited to be in. After spending a whole year being way too sedentary, I decided to try a standing desk.

The most important part of any office space is the desk, which is why I did my research before deciding on the Jarvis standing desk from Fully. I chose the Jarvis because of its impressive weight-load and stability, the generous warranty, and the many customization options it offers. I felt confident purchasing the Jarvis because Fully is a certified B Corporation and they’re committed to sustainability in both their manufacturing practices and shipping/packing methods.

As for my customized desk, I decided on the 60 x 30 inch rectangle desktop in natural bamboo. The desk frame itself is white with the mid-range size and I chose the standard up/down switch for my control piece.

I ended up loving this desk so much that I made two separate YouTube videos about it on my YouTube Channel (which I’ve also embedded down below).

In the first video you can sneak a peek at what my previous office setup looked like. I also share more about why I chose this specific desk and you can watch me assemble it.

Overall, I can say that this desk was pretty easy to assemble, even though it took me an hour or two to complete. While I assembled my desk completely by myself, I do recommend asking a friend to help you flip the desk over after you’ve assembled it. If you get a larger desktop like mine, it will be pretty heavy and difficult to safely flip over by yourself.

The second video I made about the Jarvis standing desk is more about the changes I’ve experienced after using it for a few months. For example, I’ve found myself having more energy and a happier mood in the mornings. It’s great to be able to stand, stretch, and dance around a little bit instead of being cooped up in a chair. I’ve noticed that I enjoy standing through the mornings and then come afternoon I usually lower the desk to a comfortable seated position where I can give my body a break. I also really enjoy having the 60 x 30 inch desktop because it allows me to have my planner, computer, and Wacom tablet out and available to use - all at the same time!

I also share how the desk inspired me to redesign my home office and ultimately create a functioning work space that makes me happy to be in.

Some of the items I added to the home office space:

Light Source

I wanted a simple but versatile light fixture that wouldn’t be too distracting, so I went with the Fado from Ikea. The orb-like fixture is made out of a white opaque glass which provides a nice diffused soft light. I took my lighting fixture to the next level by adding a special smart-bulb inside: the b7c from Aputure.

Organization

In order to keep my actual desk surface as clutter free as possible, I got an Alex storage drawer unit from Ikea to store all of my folders, files, camera equipment, desk tools, etc. This drawer unit was easy to put together and it holds a lot of stuff. The bottom drawers are extra large and deep so they can hold more bulky objects like an accordion file organizer.

Comfort

Instead of spending more money on an expensive standing mat or balance board, I got thrifty and repurposed a thick high-density yoga mat that I already had. I cut this mat in half to create a much cheaper version of a standing mat and so far it's been great! Also -just wanted to point out- that you get two mats when you this! Use the other mat in the kitchen below the sink or gift it to a friend who could benefit from it.

Function

I added some square cork boards to the wall next to my desk. Cork boards are great because you can pin up photos or decorations, or you can use them for other things like post-it notes with to-do’s or creating inspiration/ goal boards.

Vertical Storage + Decoration

I wanted to keep my office corner cohesive, so I decided to get some bamboo shelves to complement my bamboo desktop. These are actually called photo ledges (also from Ikea), but I use them to hold various pieces of art, my first camera, a couple plants, and a vinyl album. These shelves are pretty affordable and quite spacious! But most importantly, they hold items that bring me joy to look at.

Even though I decided to purchase a few things for my home office, that doesn’t mean that you need to do the same. If you have some blank wall space that you would like to make more interesting, you could try drawing or painting something yourself or even repurpose other pieces from around your house or apartment. For example, I was previously using my square cork boards to hold photos, but I decided to move them into my office corner for added decoration and vertical note organization. I also decided to use an old coffee mug to hold all of my pens and pencils together instead of spending money on something new. Either way, there’s all kinds of ways to switch up your home office space and make it a more functional and inviting space to work in.

Alright, time to wrap it up!

In conclusion, if you’re thinking about upgrading to a standing desk yourself, I say go for it! While the Jarvis is definitely one of the more expensive options for standing desks, I highly recommend investing in one. Whether you’re standing or sitting, the Jarvis is extremely sturdy and stable. Overall it’s just a really nicely designed and built piece of furniture. Having the option to stand or sit while I work has been a huge game changer for my mood and energy levels. I honestly can’t imagine doing my work without a standing desk.
